What can essential oils actually do for hair?

By now you should know how I am passionate about natural ingredients and essential oils, and today I want to share with you some of my favorite oils to help with common hair and scalp issues I see in the salon.

My hope is that you will begin to understand more about these special gems of nature and why they should be a part of your hair care regimen.

So…without further ado…let's get started!

Brittle Hair

Brittle hair is caused by excessive exposure to heat, chemicals such as chlorine, excessive process such as dyes, straighteners, and perms, and over exposure to the sun. Breakage happens often, as do tangling and unmanageability.

Brittle hair can be prevented by sticking to a natural hair care regimen.

Essential Oils for Brittle Hair

Geranium and rosemary essential oils helps increase circulation and stimulate hair follicles to release more natural oils.

Sandalwood essential oil helps promote healthy hair by stimulating the scalp to produce more sebum, which is a natural oil that gives hair its glossy appearance.

Dandruff

Itchiness and dry, white flakes that land on your shoulders or collar are indicative of dandruff. This condition occurs when the scalp produces excessive skin cells.

Essential Oils for Dandruff

Cedarwood essential oil relieves itching while eliminating dandruff.

Patchouli essential oil soothes itching while eliminating fungus and bacteria.

Frankincense essential oil is a strong antiseptic that also helps promote skin healing.

Scalp Psoriasis

Scalp psoriasis produces raised patches of scaly, reddish skin that sometimes affects only the scalp, forehead, behind the ears, and the back of the neck.

Usually mild to moderate, scalp psoriasis tends to respond well to treatment with essential oils. In severe cases with crusted lesions and infection, you may need to see your doctor for a stronger remedy.

Essential Oils for Scalp Psoriasis

Carrot seed essential oil promotes healing, rejuvenating and stimulating skin while fighting psoriasis and other painful, itchy conditions.

Lavender essential oil calms the nervous system and helps to reduce skin inflammation, and can speed up the healing process.

This was just a small taste of what type of problems essential oils can help solve. It was essential oils that helped me go from struggling with dry, cracking, and bleeding scalp with bald spots, to a vibrant, healthy head of hair in less than 4 months.

And it's the regular use of scalp treatments enriched with essential oils that's keeping my hair and scalp on the healthy path.

Now if you thinking "she's a professional, it's easy for her," think again. Anyone can learn about using essential oils and incorporating them into your everyday life. All it takes is a little focus and determination.

As I've mentioned before, hair care is no different than health care when it comes to the part you play in its success. If you want to have healthy hair, you have a responsibility in making that happen.

One of the most frustrating aspects of being a professional hairstylist is the non-participation many clients take in their hair care. Even with a client that comes to the salon on a regular schedule, the most we may have direct contact with their hair maybe 4 hours a month.

Being that there are approximately 730 hours in a month, that leaves 726 hours the client is on their own. During that time a person still must choose maintenance products, tools, how to prepare the hair for sleep, and much more.

And if they're not a regular salon client…well there's a whole bunch more they must do.
